Backgammon x Gravity Wave
March 2024
Collaborated with: Court Granville & Charles Martel
Producing a product out of Gravitech, a material made out of recycled fishing nets, from Gravity Wave that has a higher value that the material.
Design
The concept of this project is to make a backgammon board that can allow the traditional backgammon triangles to be curved and with the assistance of a CNC machine reducing the thicknesses of each team’s triangle to different thickness (3mm & 4mm). Additionally four walls below the board with joinery (in 2nd photo) are made to elevate the board. The top board, with the CND’d triangles will be flipped upsided-down so the indents are facing downwards. While all the pieces are joined together, LED strips will be added on to the interiors of the walls to illuminate the CNC’d triangles. With different thicknesses of the triangles, the material will allow varying levels of brightness through the Gravitech allowing a differentiation between teams.
Potential Futures
After constructing the backgammon board and installing LED lights, we realized due to both the ability to change the colours of the light manually and turn the light onto ‘music mode’, the board is a cool piece to place on a table or wall as a decorative or festive piece.
